loran butch baker about to be laid to rest. please be seated. thank you. welcome and good afternoon. my name is pastor rene schlevier. i've been asked by the families of loran butch baker and elizabeth butler to officiate this service. before we begin, will you take a moment to make sure your cell phones are silenced? thank you. >>> i had the privilege of meeting both butch and elizabeth briefly over the years that i've been in santa cruz now, but over the past several days, eve -- i've had the opportunity to learn much more about butch and elizabeth and the kind of people they were. i consider it a great honor to be included in this time of remembrance and reflection. on behalf of the baker family and the butler family and the entire santa cruz police department, thank you so much for coming together here this afternoon to honor detective sergeant loran butch baker and detective elizabeth butler. i want to thank not just the thousands we see here in this space right now but also the many thousands that we saw earlier today outside as the motorca
department's blog, loran baker's favorite bands were from the seventies, styx, even when it was bitterly cold outside, still in the shorts. when we think about elizabeth butler, apparently she got a love of investigation and police work early on. they say perry mason and rock ford files tv shows influenced her and they say he was always excited about following the evidence and uncovering the truth. you think about how these two officers came to police work in such different ways with such different histories, but united within the santa cruz police department and within that brotherhood and sister hood of police officers nationwide. you think about all the people coming together today, to thank them for the work they did. >> safe to say both officers absolutely loved their jobs. butch baker was considered to be one of the best, if not the best investigators in the entire santa cruz police department. elizabeth butler apparently loved to ride roller coasters and hike, and obviously spend a lot of time with her partner, peter woo and their two sons. we saw the pictures mome

elizabeth butler and sergeant loran butch baker were shot and killed at the doorstep of the gunman jeremy goulet's home on tuesday. he shot them after the officers interviewed him through the door for about ten minutes. it happened so fast there was no time for them to call for help. detectives haven't said how many bullets goulet fired but one of them ended up striking a woman on nearby stanford avenue. grazing her in the leg. she was shaken up but her injuries were not serious. when officers tracked down goulet he was holding guns in both hands and opened fire. they shot back and killed him. investigators say goulet had a passport and plane ticket to new mexico on him. the police chief says the traumatic events on the day is weighing heavily on officers and asked people yesterday to show support when they see the officers today. >> when you see our officers out patrolling our streets tomorrow, please provide them with all of the love and support you can. it's been a tough two days here at the police department. we've president a rough week ahead of us. we look forward to getting them ba
